Mostly due to financial difficulties of analog movie films and thus the difficulties of my project I have been silent in the last few years. My personal life was also taking much of my resources and film was not a priority. That is about to change now.
As the end of the year was approaching the idea to figure something out became stronger by the days. Many days during work I had the urge to find a way to shoot a footage, if only a test.
Super 8mm stock films became quite expensive in the last few years, a single cartridge of B&W film is about 35 EUR, so the expense of an app. 3 minutes long footage with development and HD scanning can reach up to the magic 100 EUR range, which is a lot, at least for my opportunities. Moreover Super 8mm film stocks are mostly unavailable in Hungary. I would have to order it from wittnerkinotech or pro8mm or from Kodak. I was waiting for the Kickstarter Ferrania project to jump into Super 8mm films, but things are slower there than I expected. I don't think they will produce motion picture film anytime in the near future.
So I finally took some actions and decided to downgrade from Super 8 mm to Standard 8mm. Although for this I have to purchase another camera (for a about 20-25 EUR) but still I have more opportunites in standard 8mm than in Super 8. The camera I picked is a Quartz 3 Russian-Soviet motion picture camera, that I intend to buy tomorrow. I will present its features as soon as I get it.
The reason for stepping down is price and supply. There is one, cheap available filmstock that I would regularly be able to purchase from Soós Fotó (a photo shop in Budapest).
This is Fomapan R, a B/W reversal film with ISO 100/21" from Foma Bohemia spol s.r.o, in the Czech Republic. It costs just about 13 eur for 20 meters of film. I purchased two rolls of it today. The tiny roll is a reminder of old times when the amateur filmmaker had to turnover the film in the camera after the first successful 10 meters to do the second leg, shooting both sides of the filmstock.
Can't wait to have a test with them. I may even try DIY developing. I will see.
